Iron needs shift dramatically across pregnancy. Many women don't need supplemental iron until bloodwork in the second or third trimester shows a need for it. By leaving iron out of the core formula, Pre/Postnatal can be paired with a separate iron only once it's actually indicated, and dosed to the individual instead of a fixed amount baked into every capsule regardless of need.† 

Omega-3 DHA is best taken as its own properly-dosed, properly-sourced product (fish or algae-based) rather than compressed into a multivitamin capsule, where oil stability and capsule size become tradeoffs. Separating it also means you aren't unknowingly doubling up if you already take a quality DHA / omega-3.†
